Create Affinity. Build Confidence. Inspire and Refresh.

The Medical Society of Virginia is pleased to offer the Physician Leadership Institute (PLI), a project-based curriculum program designed to develop physicians’  leadership skills, enable them to drive transformation, and positive impact in their workplaces and communities. Because of their immense clinical knowledge and skills, physicians need to lead health care change. Honing and applying leadership skills during this important time of change is impactful, empowering, and necessary.

PLI Agenda

Combining what you know about patient-focused care and quality - with a desire to lead - will produce dramatic innovations that benefit you and your patients.

PLI is modeled after the renowned Claude Moore Leadership Institute that was delivered by MSV from 2006 through 2011. This program included progressive topics, including training on bias, innovation, and modern leadership as a way to reimagine a new role for physicians and a new contract with society.

PLI builds upon the Institute's success by incorporating program design and recommendations from The Physicians Foundation, physician leaders, and training programs across the nation. With a grant from the Physicians Foundation, MSV is pleased to renew its commitment to building innovative physician leaders within the Commonwealth. MSV’s previous leadership program graduated over 100 participants, many of whom advanced to leadership positions within their profession, including (but not limited to):

  • Chief Medical Officers at major health systems
  • Secretary of Health and Human Resources - Dan Carey, MD
  • Previous State Health Commissioner - Cyn Romero, MD
  • Nine MSV presidents

Dr. Kurt Elward, immediate past MSV president, shares his PLI experience and how it has impacted his ability to lead:

All physicians are leaders in the workplace of their practice, no matter the setting.

This program develops your leadership skills in the context of the business world, including:

  • finance
  • conflict resolution
  • strategy and decision making

You don’t want to miss this opportunity that empowers you to lead in any situation in the rapidly changing world of health reform.
