MSV Endowment

Become a member of the Second Century Circle

The Medical Society of Virginia and its members have made a significant impact on the House of Medicine for the last 200 years. Help us ensure the MSV can continue its work for the next 200 years – give to the MSV Endowment.

Ways to be part of MSV’s Second Century Circle

Endowments are a way to create an enduring fund in your name, or that of someone you choose to honor or memorialize.

The gift is invested, and its earnings are used to support the purpose you have designated for the fund. Because the principal is never spent, permanent endowments continue in perpetuity. Your endowment may be unrestricted, or you may choose to restrict it to a specific program or program area – see details below.

The Shapiro-Konerding Women in Medicine Leadership Fund

Established in 2024, this fund recognizes the extraordinary leadership of MSV’s first two female presidents: Dr. Carol Shapiro and Dr. Hazle Konerding, whose dedication to the field of medicine and to their patients is an inspiration.

These groundbreaking, glass ceiling-shattering women have answered the call to leadership in every setting and every organization, at a time when women were still a minority among physicians. With an understanding of the power of collaboration and uplifting others, they have created change and paved the way for women physicians across Virginia and the United States.

The Shapiro-Konerding Women in Medicine Leadership Fund recognizes and supports future women physicians as they begin their own leadership journeys.

Some ways you can become a member include naming the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) in your will or making MSV a beneficiary of your IRA, life insurance, or retirement plan.

Will or Trust

You can plan to leave a gift to MSV that will only take effect once all of your other obligations are fulfilled.

IRA Charitable Rollovers

Use your IRA to make a tax-free gift to the Medical Society of Virginia.

401K or IRA Giving

You can donate double-taxed assets like IRAs to the Medical Society of Virginia.

Life Insurance

You can leave a new or existing unused life insurance policy to the Medical Society of Virginia.

Physician leadership in healthcare is the paramount issue. MSV is the platform for the physicians of Virginia to take reigns to advocate effectively for our patients and all citizens of the Commonwealth. That is why it is important to give to the MSV endowment.

It is important to plan financially for many life events, including education, health and retirement but also for the future of our specialty and our fellow physicians.

Medicine has been very good to me. I want to leave medicine better than when I found it. That’s why I am donating to the MSVF Policy/Advocacy Endowment Fund.

As a proud MSV member, I see PA students are the future. An endowment for PA student scholarships is important to encourage MSV recognition and participation for Virginia PAs.

I am so pleased that the MSV recognizes the value of PAs in the healthcare team.  That is why I am helping to launch this scholarship program for PA students under the MSV banner.

Endowment Program Areas

MSV Medical and PA Student Endowment Fund

The purpose of these funds is to provide scholarships to individuals accepted to or attending a Virginia medical or PA school, and financial grant support to Virginia and PA medical student-led health improvement and education initiatives through the MSV Medical Student Community.

Medical Student and PA Student Scholarship Grants: MSV Medical Societies that have a medical student scholarship and a PA student scholarship program may apply for one scholarship grant that matches the amount of a scholarship provided by the Medical Societies, not to exceed $5,000.

MSVF Medical Student and PA Student Community Leadership Grant Program: An annual allocation from this Fund will be determined by MSVF. Such allocation will support MSVF Board of Trustees approved grant requests received through its Medical Student and PA Student Community Leadership Grant Program.

MSVF Educational Endowment Fund

In 2019, MSV established an Educational Endowment Fund to provide funding for physician education, research projects, and other programs supporting the educational purposes of the Medical Society of Virginia.

The MSVF Physician Wellness Endowment Fund

In 2021, MSV established a Physician Wellness Endowment Fund to provide funding support for the SafeHaven™ program, MSV’s clinician well-being program. SafeHaven™ was founded in 2020 after recognizing a greater need to provide physicians and PAs the support they need to stay well and prevent burnout. It was established when HB115 (Hope) and SB120 (Barker) successfully passed both chambers of the General Assembly and were signed by Governor Northam. This endowment will ensure the MSV can continue to support physicians and PAs and their mental health and well-being.

MSVF Policy/Advocacy Endowment Fund

Through supporting the Health Policy Endowment, you are ensuring that MSV will have a direct impact on public policy. Policy serves as the foundation for all advocacy initiatives; supporting this work will allow physicians to be more effective advocates, deepen our impact and relationships with policymakers, and further MSV’s work as a national leader on healthcare issues.

The Funds from this endowment will establish a  Health Policy Chair. The MSV Health Policy Chair will lead the department’s efforts to develop policy positions, strategies, and analysis on issues impacting physicians, PAs, and the practice of medicine in the Commonwealth.

Primary focus areas are:

  • Develop policy positions, strategies, and analysis to advance legislative and regulatory policy priorities.
  • Collaborate with members, MSV departments, policymakers, and other stakeholders, to build consensus and advance policy proposals.
  • Lead research, policy development, and monitor emerging healthcare trends.
  • Prepare analysis for the MSV Board, Executive Committee, and the Reference Committees of the MSV House of Delegates.
  • Represent MSV to various public and private organizations, workgroups, or committees.

MSV Community Fund – Legacy of Caring Endowment

This fund was established through the generous contributions of physicians, their spouses and other individuals who believed that through a philanthropic component of MSV, physicians could make a lasting difference in the health of Virginians. Investment income from this fund is used only to make grants in support of MSVF’s mission.

MSV General Endowment

As a part of the MSVF strategic plan, a top objective is to achieve greater self-sufficiency from MSV funding for operations while working to ensure future viability.  Approved in November 2019, the General Endowment is for future programs and operations. This fund is designed to give the board flexibility to utilize “ordinary income” (interest and dividends) where needs exist. The intent is to give the foundation board flexibility while maintaining careful stewardship that will grow the fund. This includes the rule that contributions cannot be spent, only investment earnings. The principal will always be protected.
