Revision of "Good Samaritan" Statutes for Team Physicians (PDF)

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia currently has a Good Samaritan statute (§ 8.01-225) that
provides for liability protection for “any person who, in good faith, renders emergency
care or assistance, without compensation, to any ill or injured person,” and

WHEREAS, many physicians serve in a volunteer capacity for public and private school-sponsored
teams or other sports clubs, and

WHEREAS, the nature of sports related injuries varies dramatically and could be retroactively ruled
non-emergent, therefore be it

RESOLVED, the Medical Society of Virginia will support including liability protection for non-emergent
care by volunteer team physicians in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
