Established in 2024, this fund recognizes the extraordinary leadership of MSV’s first two female presidents: Dr. Carol Shapiro and Dr. Hazle Konerding, whose dedication to the field of medicine and to their patients is an inspiration.
These groundbreaking, glass ceiling-shattering women have answered the call to leadership in every setting and every organization, at a time when women were still a minority among physicians. With an understanding of the power of collaboration and uplifting others, they have created change and paved the way for women physicians across Virginia and the United States.
The Shapiro-Konerding Women in Medicine Leadership Fund recognizes and supports future women physicians as they begin their own leadership journeys.
The Shapiro-Konerding Women in Medicine Leadership Award honors an early career female physician whose outstanding efforts have substantially improved patient care, either locally or abroad. Candidate must be within the first ten years of her medical career in Virginia. The ten years begins after medical school, and on the first day of residency.

Candidates may self-nominate by submitting their own application, or be nominated by peers or colleagues. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria.
License
Applicants must be licensed and practicing in Virginia and be from any disciplines or sector.
Experience
Applicants must have at least four years of professional practice experience.
Letters of Support & CV
Two letters of support (from someone other than the nominator or nominee). A copy of the nominee’s CV or resume must accompany the nomination.
No Membership Required
Nominees do not have to be members of MSV to be nominated or selected for the fund.
Self-assessment & Interview
If a nominee is selected as a finalist, they will be asked to complete a leadership self-assessment and attend an interview with the selection committee.
