Remembering Dr. Lawrence “Larry” K. Monahan
Dr. Lawrence “Larry” K. Monahan, age 79, passed away on November 23, 2020. This is a tremendous loss for MSV and the entire physician community. Dr. Monahan was a member of the MSV for 46 years, serving in numerous leadership roles including Speaker of the House, President in 1999, and served on the MSVPAC and MSVF boards. He was a current member of MSV’s Virginia Delegation to the American Medical Association, a role he served in for over 20 years.
Since 1974, he had been practicing General Internal Medicine in a private medical practice, dedicated to the finest traditions of the patient-physician relationship. He was known as a careful, caring and kindly physician, and an excellent teacher and role model for medical students, interns, and residents, whom he taught in his position of Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at both the University of Virginia School of Medicine (MD, Roanoke program), and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO, at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg). A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, he had received the American Medical Association’s Continuing Medical Education Award every year of his practice, and had published in state and national medical journals.
Most importantly, Larry was a dear friend to many of us at MSV. He was eager to mentor our medical student and young physician members on parliamentary procedure and helped to craft countless resolutions written by first time delegates. Larry guest lectured at events held by our medical students and shared his experiences and passion. Many medical students at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke credit him as their reason for engaging in organized medicine.
The family will celebrate Larry’s life on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. The memorial service will be live streamed for public attendance on the Second Presbyterian Church YouTube channel.
