In order to hold membership in the MSV, you must be a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) with an active Virginia medical license. Active members of MSV are voting members that may hold office in the MSV and serve on committees.
Physicians working full time in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Part-Time - $375
A physician who is working 20 hours or less per week is considered an active member.
Public Health Service - $125
A physician currently working full-time for a State, Federal or non-profit agency or Veterans' Administration in Virginia.
Military (Active Duty) - $125
A physician currently working full-time as an active duty medical officer of the armed forces.
2nd Spouse - $349
A spouse membership is given if both physicians are MSV members. One spouse pays full active dues ($499), and the other spouse is entitled to a dues reduction as long as both remain active members in the MSV.
First and Second Year in Practice - $249 and $375
A physician who has just completed their residency and/or fellowship and will begin their first year in practice. Dues are reduced 50 percent for first year in practice and 25 percent for second year in practice.
Fully Retired (MSV member for less than 10 years) - $125
A physician who is fully retired and is not working in any other capacity is allowed active membership in the MSV. (A previous medical license in Virginia is required.)
Resident/Fellow/Intern - $0
A resident physician member must be an intern, resident or fellow in an approved training program in Virginia. Once a resident physician joins the MSV, his/her membership is active until the completion of their program. Resident physician membership is terminated automatically when the member completes their training program.
Medical Student - $100 (four-year MSV and AMA membership)
A student member must attend one of the five medical schools in Virginia with an active MSV chapter (EVMS, VCU, UVA, VCOM, VTC, LUCOM).
Non-Working Physician - $125
Physicians who are not fully retired, but not currently practicing or working in any capacity (yet), wish to continue their membership with the MSV. This is typically used for maternity leave, sabbatical, overseas mission work and additional higher education, etc.
An affiliate member must be a health care provider in good standing with their profession, their community and MSV or a person who is active in or supports a health care delivery system. Affiliate members shall not vote or hold office but shall be entitled to all other privileges of membership including serving on committees or task forces.
Physician Assistant - $100
Physician assistants must hold an active PA license from the Virginia Board of Medicine.
Physician Assistant Student - $25 (one-time fee for entire program)
A full-time student in a Virginia program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
Associate Members - Practicing or working outside of Virginia - $125
An associate membership is for physicians not working in Virginia. Associate members are dues paying members but shall not vote, hold office, or serve on committees. Associate members are entitled to all other privileges of membership.
MSV dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution but may be deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense. Twenty percent (20%) of MSV dues are not deductible as an ordinary business expense because this portion of dues is attributable to lobbying activities. The Medical Society of Virginia is a non-profit organization focused on promoting the science and art of medicine for the benefit of people of Virginia.
