Categories of Membership

MSV Membership

In order to hold membership in the MSV, you must be a doctor of medicine (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO) with an active Virginia medical license. Active members of MSV are voting members that may hold office and serve on committees. Annual dues provide membership January through December and are priced according to the categories below.

Full-Time

$499

Physicians working full time in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Part-Time

$375

A physician who is working 20 hours or less per week is considered an active member.

Fully Retired

$125

A member who is fully retired.

Public Service

$125

A physician currently working full-time for a State, Federal, or non-profit agency or Veterans’ Administration in Virginia; or working full-time as an active duty medical officer of the armed forces.

First Year in Practice

$249

A physician who has just completed their residency and/or fellowship and will begin their first year in practice. Dues are reduced 50 percent for first year in practice.

Second Year in Practice

$375

A physician who has just completed their residency and/or fellowship and will begin their second year in practice. Dues are reduced 25 percent for second year in practice.

Resident/Fellow/

Intern

$0

A resident physician member must be an intern, resident or fellow in an approved training program in Virginia. Once a resident physician joins the MSV, his/her membership is active until the completion of their program. Resident physician membership is terminated automatically when the member completes their training program.

Medical Student

$50 (four-year MSV and AMA membership)

A student member must attend one of the five medical schools in Virginia with an active MSV chapter (EVMS at ODU, VCU, UVA, VCOM, VTC, LUCOM).

Physician Assistant Student*

$25 (one-time fee for the entire program)

A full-time student in a Virginia program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Physician Assistant

$100

Physician assistants must hold an active PA license from the Virginia Board of Medicine.

Out-of-State

$125

A person not currently practicing medicine in Virginia and who holds or has held an active license. There is no right to vote, hold office, or serve on a committee.

Lifetime

$0

Has been a member for 10+ years and is fully retired.

Tax Information

MSV dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution but may be deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense. 25% of MSV dues are not deductible as an ordinary business expense because this portion of dues is attributable to lobbying activities. The Medical Society of Virginia is a non-profit organization focused on promoting the science and art of medicine for the benefit of people of Virginia.
