This year’s upcoming Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) Annual Meeting, from Oct. 13 to 16 at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, is already proving to be drastically different from previous meetings for one reason: the record breaking number of medical students attending to represent four of Virginia’s medical schools. More than 150 medical students are registered to attend from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine and Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine.
“We could not be more thrilled with the excitement we see from medical students in wanting to attend our events and be actively engaged in influencing health care in Virginia—before they even become physicians,” said MSV President Edward Koch, M.D., FACOG. “I’m glad they recognize the opportunities that MSV can provide them to amplify their voices, drive positive change and develop lifelong bonds with other students and with physicians.”
MSV physician and medical student leaders are encouraged by the incredible 155 percent increase in participation from medical students this year, compared to last year. The increased participation of the MSV Medical Student section is a result of the organization’s engagement transformation, which has been underway over the last year and a half.
During this transformation, physician leadership and staff have been focused on ensuring that our organizational strategy is designed to meet the needs of the 21st century physician. The creation of additional physician opportunities to provide expanded programming in advocacy, health policy, leadership, networking and community outreach is underway.
“Our current, wonderfully-engaged, and personable medical student members and leaders make the future of our medical profession, and of our Medical Society of Virginia, so very bright!” said Larry Monahan, M.D., FACP, American Medical Association delegate for the Virginia delegation from MSV. “I am absolutely delighted to be one of their teachers and one of their mentors at our MSV!”
“Connecting with students always reminds me of the noble reasons to serve as a physician and how much fun that often difficult work can be when surrounded by like-minded professionals,” – S. Hughes Melton, MD, MBA, FAAFP, former MSV Speaker and former MSV Foundation President.
"I always look forward to Annual Meeting, but this year promises to be extra special. With a record number of medical students attending, you will be able to feel the energy in the room." – Monica Melmer, UVA Medical Student Associate Director, MSV Board of Directors
“I'm extremely excited to see so many of Virginia's medical students come to the MSV Annual Meeting. From my first year, where 34 of my fellow students participated, we have grown so much. The 150+ coming to this year's meeting is a testament to the strength of the organization, as well as the tremendous support we receive from physician members and MSV staff.” – Lee Ouyang, EVMS AMA Medical Student Section Vice Chair
"I am ecstatic that we have doubled our attendance for this year's annual meeting. It is truly a testament to the strength of our medical student section and the phenomenal support we receive from the Medical Society Virginia. We have one of the most engaged medical student sections in the country and I look forward to the future accomplishments we will collectively achieve." – Matt Wallace, VCU MSV Medical Student Section At- Large Officer
"The MSV annual meeting during my first year of medical school is what solidified my desire to be a leader in organized medicine. I could not be more excited that we have reached a record number of students attending the conference this year, and I can't wait to watch a passion for MSV ignite in a new batch of medical students. We are lucky to attend medical school in Virginia, where student voices are highly valued by physicians in our state society." – Samantha Hay, VCU MSV Medical Student Section Vice Chair
“As I've grown throughout medical school, I've been pleased to see the MSV growing right alongside me, but never did I think I would see a MSV Annual meeting with such stupendous student support! It's heartwarming to know that as I graduate I'm leaving the MSV in the safe hands of so very many eager, intelligent, and determined student leaders.” – Chris Li, VTC MSV Medical Student Section Chair
