The Virginia Board of Pharmacy issued a guidance document on physicians dispensing drugs and the types of dispensing licenses available to physicians:

  • Permitted physicians – Practice as a pharmacy. This authorizes the Board to license a physician to practice pharmacy when good cause is shown that the pharmacy services are nto otherwise readily available. This license is usually granted to physicians working in rural areas.
  • Physicians selling drugs. This more common dispensing license is the license for a practitioner of the healing arts to sell controlled substances. With this license, a physician must comply with a set of regulations which relate specifically to this license.
