Did you know that section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act protects patients from discrimination and nd individuals with disabilities?  Health practices are prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, and sex, including discrimination based on pregnancy, gender identity and sex stereotyping.  Section 1557 also requires covered entities to display notices in the top 15 languages spoken by individuals with limited English proficiency in that state that inform patients of nondiscrimination and the availability of language assistance services.  Section 1557 applies to all health programs and entities that accept federal reimbursement, including Medicare and Medicaid.  

The top 15 languages in Virginia are:

•    English
•    Spanish
•    Vietnamese
•    Chinese
•    Arabic
•    Tagalog
•    Persian (Farsi)
•    Amharic
•    Urdu
•    French
•    Russian
•    Hindi
•    German
•    Bengali
•    Kru (Bassa), Ibo, and Yoruba

Translated copies of the non-discrimination statement can be found here; please print and display these in your practices to remain in compliance.
