During the 2016 General Assembly Session, Del. Sam Rasoul sponsored a bill to direct health regulatory boards to develop regulations allowing some volunteer service time to count towards licensees continuing education requirements. The Board of Medicine voted to enact policy that would allow doctors of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic and podiatry to count up to 15 hours of uncompensated care delivered to low-income individuals through a local health department or free clinic towards Type 2 continuing education hours. One hour of volunteer care will equal one hour of continuing education, and the licensee would need to obtain documentation from the clinic or local health department to receive credit.
