Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on Friday as a category 4 hurricane. Harvey has since been downgraded to a tropical storm but has stayed in the area bringing large amounts of rain causing massive flooding to Houston and other parts of Texas. Floodwaters are continuing to rise and the area is still receiving heavy rainfall. Multiple hospitals have flooded making it difficult for medical staff to do their jobs.
Since Friday, nine people have died and over 2,000 have been rescued. Officials are estimating 30,000 people will need emergency shelters and 450,000 people will seek disaster aid.
The Texas Medical Association is providing regular updates and has encouraged physicians to be prepared to be called upon to help with disaster preparedness and injuries in the aftermath of the storm.
