Prescription Monitoring Program

The Virginia Department of Health Profession’s Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) was created with the mission of promoting the appropriate use of controlled substances for legitimate medical purposes while deterring the misuse, abuse, and diversion of controlled substances. The PMP gathers prescription data for Schedule II to Schedule IV drugs into a central record which can then be used by restricted authorized users to assist in preventing the illegal use of prescription drugs. Collected data is used to determine a patient’s treatment history and decrease risk of duplicate prescriptions from other prescribers and/or pharmacies. The Department of Health Professions (DHP) maintains all of this collected information with strict confidentiality.
