The following speakers will address assembled Virginia physicians assembled for the Medical Society of Virginia Annual Meeting:

Carl W. Armstrong, MD, State Epidemiologist, Commonwealth of Virginia

Michael Edmond, MD, MPH, MPA, Chair for Infectious Disease, VCU Medical Center

WHAT:

  • The 2007 Annual Medical Educational Symposium Presented by the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation.
  • Session will address emerging practice guidelines for MRSA prevention.

WHY:

  • MRSA has been recognized by the Journal of the American Medical Association as a “significant health problem” and was responsible for nearly 19,000 deaths in the United States in 2005.
  • Hospital stays for MRSA have more than tripled from 2000 to 2005 to 368,000 according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
  • Antibiotic resistance is a key element to the proliferation of MRSA
  • MRSA is not just contracted in health care settings, but can be spread through contact.
  • The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation, in partnership with the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health, has distributed free antibiotic resistance toolkits to schools, physicians offices, hospitals and day cares; reaching over 120,000 Virginia citizens (more information at www.msvfoundation.org). Attention to this issue is paramount to preventing the spread of MRSA.
