Richmond, Va. – The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) has developed a multi-faceted program to help physicians navigate the maze of health information technology. Combining web-based educational sessions with a full-day summit, MSV will provide physicians and their practice administrators information that will assist them in implementing an electronic health records system (EHR) or bringing their current system to meaningful use so that they can optimize the use of health information technology in patient care and so that they may take advantage of federal incentives included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Webinars will be conducted through September leading up to a full day Health IT Summit on Thurs., Oct. 21, 2010 at the Westfields Marriott in Chantilly. The summit, which is scheduled in conjunction with the MSV annual meeting, will include educational sessions for current users of EHR systems and those who are interested in implementing a system.

“Sorting out what this means for a physician’s practice is complex. We have heard from our members that they want more information on how to take advantage of federal incentives and how to make the best choice for their practices,” said Rufus Phillips, MSV executive vice president. “We hope to make EHR adoption easier for our members so that they can focus more of their time on treating their patients.”

So far, sixteen organizations that specialize in EHR systems have committed to participate in the summit and will offer attendees the opportunity to participate in demonstrations and ask questions. They include:

NextGen Healthcare, Greenway Medical Technologies, MedPlus, Pulse, Inc., EHS, MedcomSoft, Eclipsys Corporation, McKesson, Medbizonics, Cerner Corporation, Sage, athenahealth, GE Healthcare, Allscripts, ClearPractice and e-MDs.

During the summit, MSV will introduce a new program that will help MSV members in the selection of an EHR product, saving them time and money as well as lowering the risk associated with the lengthy process of adopting an EHR system.

The Medical Society of Virginia is the professional association for physicians in the commonwealth. Dedicated to supporting physicians in the practice of medicine, MSV advocates on their behalf to ensure physician influence on health care legislation and policy improvements and provides a variety of educational and support activities that assist physicians in the practice of medicine.
