Physicians needed for state boards—Applications due March 15

The March 15 deadline to submit an application for a state board appointment is quickly approaching. The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) is asked to submit at least three nominees for consideration for the positions below. Please note that while MSV is asked to submit nominees for consideration, appointment is at the governor’s discretion. Physicians are needed to apply for a number of gubernatorial appointment opportunities, especially for the following:

  • Board for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology - otolaryngologist
  • Board for Opticians - ophthalmologist
  • Board of Medicine - osteopathic, 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th
  • State Board of Health - MSV representative
  • Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority - health professional

Click here for instructions on submitting your application for gubernatorial appointment. While applications are taken year round, it is recommended that you complete your state application prior to March 15, 2012 for full consideration.

Board of Medicine
The self-policing agency for Virginia physicians whose duties include the licensing of practitioners, evaluation of complaints against practitioners for misconduct and establishment of regulations governing the practice of medicine.

  • State-designated qualifications:
    • Osteopathic physician; or
    • Physician must reside in the following districts. Click here for the Congressional district map. Districts will be changing in the coming months as a result of decennial redistricting.

      o Congressional district 10; or

State Board of Health
Provides leadership in planning and policy development for the Virginia Department of Health and makes recommendations concerning health care policy to the governor, the General Assembly and the secretary of health and human resources.

    • Hospital industry representative; or
    • MSV representative

Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

Board of Medical Assistance Services
Serves as the advisory body to the Department of Medical Assistance Services, the state agency which administers Medicaid and the state Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Board of Visitors of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind
Governs the educational programs and services to deaf, blind, and multi-disabled students enrolled at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Commonwealth Council on Aging
Promotes an efficient, coordinated approach by state government to meeting the needs of older Virginians.

Commonwealth Health Research Board
Provides financial support for human health research in the Commonwealth. The Boards' primary responsibility is to make grants for human health research, especially for those efforts that have the potential of maximizing human health benefits for citizens of the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative Advisory Board
Through the establishment of the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (CNI) Trust Fund, funds are available to Virginia-based organizations, institutions and researchers to address the needs of people with acquired neurotrauma. The Advisory Board disburses CNI funds through a grant application process for research proposals and innovative community-based rehabilitation programs.

    • Physician with experience in brain/spinal injury

Hemophilia Advisory Board
Advises and assists the Virginia Department of Health in the administration of the CSHCN Hemophilia Program. The Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Hemophilia Program is a legislatively-enacted program through the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Child and Adolescent Health for the care and treatment of persons with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.

    • Medical specialist

Medical Advisory Board for the Department of Motor Vehicles
Has the authority to review an individual's ability to drive safely. Based on its assessment, the board can restrict, revoke or take no action regarding the individual's driver's license.

    • Licensed Virginia physician

State Executive Council for Comprehensive Services for At-Risk Youth and Families
Assures collaborative programmatic policy development, fiscal policy development and administrative oversight for the efficient and effective provision of child centered, family focused and community based services to eligible emotionally and behaviorally troubled children/youth and their families in the least restrictive, appropriate environment.

  • Number of vacancies: 2
  • Qualifications:
    • Private provider

Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Program Board of Directors
Governs Virginia’s birth injury program which covers medically necessary expenses for qualified infants.

  • Number of vacancies: 2
  • Qualifications:
    • Professional with experience in the disabled community; or
    • Participating physician

Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority
Established by the governor and General Assembly to move the commonwealth forward in achieving its vision of ensuring a quality health workforce for all Virginians.

  • Qualifications:
    • Health professional/employer representative; or
    • Health professional/education and training representative
