MSV president supports heart health efforts
25 February 2011

On Feb. 25, Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) President
Cynthia C. Romero, M.D., FAAFP showed support for Virginia’s heart health efforts by attending the heart health press conference hosted by Virginia State Health Commissioner
Karen Remley, M.D., M.B.A., FAAP and First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell in honor of heart month in February. During the event, they shared the following news:
- The number of heart attack deaths has declined in Virginia for the tenth year in a row, dropping 45 percent over the ten year period.
- There were 1,872 fewer heart-attack deaths in 2010 compared to 2000.
- Heart attack deaths in women decreased by 49 percent from 2000 to 2009.
- The difference in heart attack rates between African American and Caucasian women declined from 22 percent to one percent, reducing the racial health disparity.
“It is wonderful to see that heart attack-related deaths have declined so much in the last ten years,” Dr. Romero said. “However, it is still incumbent on physicians to actively support prevention efforts and raise awareness on this issue. We can continue to keep heart health a priority by encouraging others to get proper screening and engage in a healthy lifestyle.”
At the conclusion of the event, attendees took a "Capitol Feats" walk around Capitol Square to highlight the importance of physical activity and encourage others to make any form of physical fitness a daily part of their lives. More information about the event and photos can be found on the Virginia Department of Health Web site.
