In a joint letter to Gov. Bob McDonnell, the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV), the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA) and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA) urged Gov. McDonnell to sign the medical malpractice cap bills, HB 1459 and SB 771, and the legislation that clarifies what information is covered by the peer review privilege, HB 2373 and SB 1469.
The successful passage of the legislation by the General Assembly and the joint letter are the culmination of years of collaborative work among MSV, VHHA and VTLA. Legislators encouraged the stakeholder groups to meet about the medical malpractice cap beginning in the spring of 2009. General Assembly leaders also urged the groups to arrive at an agreement on the discoverability of peer review and related documents.
The joint letter heralds the medical malpractice cap legislation for the improved compensation it will provide to injured patients coupled with the certainty it provides for physicians and hospitals. The groups also express support for the enhancements made to protecting the process by which patient safety can be improved. To read the letter, click here
