Committees

The Medical Society of Virginia is always looking for new ideas and participation from its members. To learn how the Society’s official policies are adopted, we first encourage your involvement by attending or participating as a delegate to MSV’s House of Delegates, or by attending events such as White Coats on Call lobbying days and our Legislative Summit. We make it easy for you to be part of influencing the future of medicine in Virginia.

The following are examples of committees and task forces whereby MSV utlizes its members for their expertise and knowledge. Due to the unique nature and timing of each, please contact the membership department to speak with someone personally about involvement. Communications Committee
The purpose of this committee is to provide feedback and assistance to the communications department as it develops new programs to inform members and promote MSV. Examples of committee involvement include participation in development of MSV’s new Web site and visual identity.

Health Care Finance and Policy Task Force
The purpose of this task force is to develop policy and make recommendations regarding the policies and initiatives of managed care organizations, insurers and payers. Particular attention will be paid to the business side of medical practice, including fair business practice standards and compliance, timely payment issues, network requirements, contracting issues and referrals from the MSV House of Delegates assigned to this group by the MSV board.

Legislative Committee
The legislative committee is a comprehensive group of MSV members that features physicians from a wide range of specialties and local medical societies. Presenting ideas to the committee via the annual Legislative Summit is the most effective way to get member proposals heard.

Medical Liability Advisory Group
This group's objectives are to develop and assess strategies for addressing the liability cap issue as it matures and faces potential challenges in the Virginia General Assembly. The MLAG will advise the board and the executive committee on those strategies and assist in communicating to the membership and the medical community at large what MSV is doing about the cap and why. The MLAG will be focusing on the development of practical, politically viable strategies to maintain the cap as best we can. It will review and assess options to the current cap in the likely event we need to have alternative plans at hand.

Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) Governing Council
The purpose of the MSV-RFS is to enhance the future of medicine and provide interns, residents and fellows greater participation in the affairs of MSV and a more direct role in policy deliberations. The MSV-RFS is comprised of physicians who are in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved internship, residency or fellowship program in the commonwealth of Virginia. The MSV-RFS is represented by a 10-member governing council that guides the section’s activities and programs.
