HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) yields regulations that affect multiple aspects of the health care industry. The federal government plays a role in maintaining the privacy and security of health information so physician practices must be aware of their responsibilities and strive toward compliance. It can be challenging to keep up with HIPAA, but it's necessary to stay current because standards for uniform electronic healthcare transactions and code sets established by HIPAA are updated periodically.
