The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) wants to help you understand health information privacy, particularly around the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy and security rules, which provide federal protections for personal health information (PHI) held by covered entities and gives patients rights with respect to that information. We also provide you with information on the HITECH Act, whcih was created to enhance enforcement and increased penalties for violations, breach notification requirements, provisions for business associates, and enhanced accounting of disclosures
