HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) continues to yield regulations that affect multiple aspects of the health care industry. Now that the federal government has a role in maintaining the privacy and security of health information, physician practices must become aware of their responsibilities and strive towards compliance. Additionally, standards for uniform electronic healthcare transactions and code sets established by HIPAA are slated to be updated periodically. This is necessary to keep up with information technology and an ever-evolving health care system, but it places a burden on physician practices.

The Medical Society of Virginia offers staff training and awareness sessions in addition to compliance assessments and evaluations. Our guidance focuses on providing accurate information aimed at a common-sense compliance approach. Be sure to check out our HIPAA Knowledgebase. If you have questions regarding HIPAA, please e-mail or call Jeff Buthe, MSV senior policy analyst, at 804 | 377-1035.
