MSV Annual Meeting FAQs

Why does the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) have an annual meeting?
The primary function of the annual meeting is to convene the MSV House of Delegates (HOD) so that it can conduct the business of the organization as directed by MSV’s bylaws.

When and where is the annual meeting this year?
October 21 - 24, 2010 
Westfields Marriott - Chantilly, VA

Is it always held at the same place?
The annual meeting rotates around the geographic regions of the state.

Who can attend the annual meeting?
Anyone can attend, however only delegates are permitted to vote during sessions of the HOD.

What does the House of Delegates do?
The Medical Society of Virginia’s HOD is the organization's principal policymaking body. At its annual meeting, the House acts on numerous reports and resolutions and establishes policy to guide the society and its members. It also approves the budget and elects officers, directors and delegates to the AMA.

How are delegates chosen?
Each component society, component student society, component resident physician section, recognized specialty society, hospital medical staff section, health system or academic medical school annually elects a specified number of delegates and alternates to the MSV HOD.

How do issues come before the House of Delegates for consideration?
Issues to be considered before the HOD must be submitted in the form of a resolution. Resolutions must be received at the MSV headquarters no later than 45 days prior to the first session of the HOD. Proposers of resolutions are encouraged to submit them throughout the year, and in coordination with local and state national meetings of component societies, and general medical and/or specialty societies.

What else happens at the annual meeting?
In addition to attending the HOD, the MSV annual meeting is an opportunity for attendees to participate in educational sessions, network with colleagues at board, district, specialty, section and committee meetings, and visit with friends at social events, including the MSV Foundation’s fundraising event, the Physicians’ Gala.

Is CME available?
Traditionally CME is available, but determined annually.

How much does it cost to attend?
There is no cost to attend the meetings.

Are there activities for my family?
Family members are welcome at all social events.
