Associate Members – Living outside of Virginia
An Associate membership is for physicians not living and/or practicing in Virginia. Associate members must be doctors of medicine or osteopathy with a current Virginia medical license. Associate members are dues paying members but shall not vote, hold office, or serve on committees. Associate members are entitled to all other privileges of membership.
Annual Dues: $100
Active Members
In order to hold membership in the MSV, you must be a doctor of medicine (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO) with an active Virginia medical license. Active members of the Medical Society of Virginia are voting members that may hold office in the MSV and serve on committees.

Active Members
Physicians practicing or working full time in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Annual Dues: $425
Part-Time Active
A physician who is working 20 hours or less per week is considered an active member.
Annual Dues: $215
Public Health Service
A physician currently working full-time for a State or Federal Agency, Public Health Service or Veterans' Administration in Virginia.
Annual Dues: $100
Military (Active Duty)
A physician currently working full-time as an active medical officer of the armed forces.
Annual Dues: $100
2nd Spouse Membership (husband/wife)
A spouse membership is given if both physicians are MSV members. One spouse pays Full Active Dues ($425), and the other spouse is entitled to a 50% dues reduction as long as both remain active members in the MSV.
Second dues paying spouse: $215
First Year in Practice
A physician who has just completed their residency and/or fellowship and will begin their first year in practice. Dues are reduced 50% for first year in practice and 25% for second year in practice.

Fully Retired (MSV member for less than 10 years)
A physician who is fully retired and is not working in any other capacity is allowed active membership in the MSV. (A previous medical license in Virginia is required.)
Annual Dues: $100
Fully Retired (MSV member for more than 10 years)
An MSV member who has maintained membership for 10 years or more, who fully retires (no patient care or other work) will be granted dues exemption. This physician can remain an active member of the MSV without an active Virginia medical license due to retirement.
Annual Dues: $0
Over Age 70 (MSV member for more than 10 years)
A physician who has been a MSV member for 10 years or more, will be granted dues exemption when he/she reaches age 70.

Residents/Fellows/Interns
A resident physician member must be an intern, resident or fellow in an approved training program in Virginia. Once a resident physician joins the MSV, his/her membership is active until the completion of their program. Resident physician membership is terminated automatically when the member completes their training program.
Dues: $50 (one time fee)
Student Members
A student member must attend one of the four medical schools in Virginia (EVMS, MCV, UVA, VCOM). Any student membership shall terminate automatically when the member graduates from medical school or when he/she is no longer enrolled in a medical school in Virginia. Students that join the AMA through the MSV receive a significant discount on AMA dues, as shown below (MSV pays half your AMA dues).

MSV membership only = $6.00
Non-Practicing Members
Physicians who are not retired, but not currently practicing or working in any capacity but wish to continue their membership with the MSV. This is typically used for maternity leave, sabbatical, overseas mission work and additional higher education.
Annual Dues: $100
Tax information
MSV dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution but may be deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense. Twenty-five percent (25%) of MSV dues are not deductible as an ordinary business expense because this portion of dues is attributable to lobbying activities.
