Lawrence E. Blanchard, III, M.D. is a managing partner with Dermatology Associates of Virginia. As a former president of both the Medical Society of Virginia and the Richmond Academy of Medicine, Dr. Blanchard has had the opportunity to participate locally, statewide and nationally in organized medicine, with special interests in cost containment and health care reform. Additionally, he has served on the Board of the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation for six years, holding several leadership positions including Board Chairman of the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (2006-2007). He was also on the Founding Board of the Richmond Academy of Medicine’s Project Access program, and volunteers to see uninsured Project Access patients in his practice. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Duke University Marine Laboratory at the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. Dr. Blanchard is a graduate of Duke University and received his medical degree and his dermatology training from Washington University in St. Louis.
Daniel Carey, M.D., FACC, Director
Lynchburg
Dr. Carey is the current president of the Medical Society of Virginia and immediate past-president of the MSV Foundation. He is a renowned cardiologist who led a team to develop one of the best acute MI angioplasty programs in the country. He practices general and interventional cardiology and is the medical director of the cardiac catheterization lab at Centra Health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and received his Fellowship in General and Interventional Cardiology from Emery University School of Medicine. Dr. Carey became involved with the MSV Foundation because “it is a group dedicated to furthering the best aspirations of medicine.” Dr. Carey is an Inaugural Class Fellow of MSVF’s 2006-07 Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute.
Krista Crawford-Mathis, PhD, President
Roanoke
Prior to her term as president Dr. Krista Crawford-Mathis served as the Vice President, Development Chair, and Gala Chair of the MSV Foundation. She is involved in several professional management organizations and nonprofit organizations, including Peacework Development Fund, Academy of Management, Medical Society of Virginia Alliance, and American Academy of Management Alliance. Her contagious enthusiasm is complemented by her background as a human resource executive. Dr. Crawford-Mathis considers her greatest professional accomplishment to be starting a human resource department for a small production plant of 150 men—skills that she now uses to expand her commitment to local, regional and global community health outreach. She holds a PhD from Capella University, MBA from Radford University, and BS from the University of Arkansas, and is currently an adjunct instructor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Champlain College.

Georgean G. deBlois, M.D., Director

Dr. deBlois is a pathologist with Johnston-Willis Hospital. She currently serves as the Vice Chief of Staff and will serve as Chief of Staff from 2008-2010 for Chippenham Johnston-Willis (CJW) Medical Center. Dr. deBlois is a former president of the Virginia Society of Pathology and is active in the Richmond Academy of Medicine. She received a leadership award for service to the Academy in 2000. Dr. deBlois served as an Assistant Professor of Pathology for the Medical College of Virginia from 1985-88. She received her BA, MS and M.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan
Michael M. Dudley, Director

Michael M. Dudley is the President and CEO of Optima Health Plan and a Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare. Optima Health Plan is the health plan division of Sentara Healthcare. Serving 415,000 members in Virginia, Optima Health Plan provider network consists of nearly 12,000 physicians and 60 hospitals. Prior to joining Sentara in 1996, Mr. Dudley served as President of Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company, President of the Northeast Region of Kaiser Permanente in Hartford Connecticut, and President of Kaiser’s Vallejo Medical Center in California. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and his master’s degree of health administration from the University of Colorado where he was Class Valedictorian and recipient of the Foster G. McGaw Scholarship. He completed Stanford University’s executive management program and is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives. Mr. Dudley serves as a Director on the Boards of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) – the nation’s principal association of health plans and insurance companies, the Virginia Association of Health Plans, and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.
Kurt S. Elward, M.D., MPH, Director

Dr. Elward has built his family medicine practice around “serving my patients in ways that are meaningful to them.” In addition to his private practice, Dr. Elward is Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University; Medical Director of Quality Improvement for Southern Health Services of Virginia; and serves on the National Asthma Education Program Coordinating Committee and its Select Guideline Implementation Panel. He is a member of the Technical Expert Advisory Panel for Children’s Asthma Performance Measures at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; and a member Asthma Measures Team for the NCQA-AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. He is also a volunteer physician at the Charlottesville Free Clinic; the Medical Director of Pregnancy Centers of Virginia; and President of the Haiti Health Care Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting development of health care services in rural Haiti. Dr. Elward completed his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois, where he also received his medical degree as a James Scholar. He completed a fellowship in health services research as well as an MPH at the University of Washington. He is a member of AOA, being inducted by the medical students at the University of Rochester as an outstanding teacher and role model. Dr. Elward is an Inaugural Class Fellow of MSVF’s 2006-07 Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute, and serves as Medical Director of MSVF's TO GOAL™ and IMPACT™ quality improvement programs. He was recognized for his leadership in quality improvement in 2009 when he received the Foundation's first Salute to Service Award for Advancing Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.
Thomas W. Eppes, Jr., M.D., Director

Dr. Eppes is the immediate past president of the Medical Society of Virginia. He is a family practice physician with Central Virginia Family Physicians in Forest, Virginia. He is the Past President of Lynchburg Academy of Medicine. He is a founding member of both the Boards of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia and United HealthCare of Virginia/Virginia Physicians Network. A father of three, Dr. Eppes’ commitment to the youth of the Forest area includes helping teach family life and anatomy at the middle school and the high school, being team/school physician, as well as coaching the JV girls soccer team at the high school. He received his Bachelor of Science from William & Mary and his M.D. from the University of Virginia.

Patrick Farrell is CEO of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital as well as the Market Lead for the Central Virginia market of HCA's Capital Division. The Central Virginia market is a comprehensive provider network with 6,700 employees, six hospital campuses, two same-day surgery centers and numerous outpatient diagnostic and treatment centers. As CEO of Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Pat oversees a three-campus facility with 767 beds. Pat received his bachelor's degree in economics from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and his master's degree in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He also serves on the boards of the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Foundation, Mid-Atlantic American Heart Association and Senior Connections.
Randolph J. Gould, M.D., FACS, Director

Dr. Gould has been practicing general surgery with the Norfolk Surgical Group, a division of Sentara Medical Group, for over 25 years. Dr. Gould is a member of the EVMS Board of Visitors where he serves as chairman of the academic affairs committee. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he received his M.D. degree in 1978. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a past president of the Medical Society of Virginia. He has been actively involved in the American Medical Association’s legislative efforts for several years where he serves on the Council on Legislation. He is also currently Vice Chairman of the Virginia delegation to the American Medical Association. Dr. Gould believes working with the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation reconnects physicians to their core values in the medical profession.
Barry L. Gross, M.D., Director

Dr. Gross is an Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Riverside Health System. He received his undergraduate B.A. degree in English and medical degree from the University of Alabama. He served his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Riverside Regional Medical Center, and entered private practice in 1979. He became board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1981. Dr Gross has served as the National Chairman of the Junior Fellow Division of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; on the national Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology; and on the Technical Bulletin Committee for Gynecology for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also serves on the Board of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Dr. Kanter is a cardiologist with Cardiovascular Associates, Ltd. serving Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Prior to this position, he completed a fellowship in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Kanter worked as a medical volunteer in Zambia, Africa and served as a Locum Tenens with Indian Health Services in New Mexico. He is President of Medical Staff for Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, District 2 Director for the Medical Society of Virginia, on the MSV Foundation Board, and is immediate past president of the Virginia Beach Medical Society. Dr. Kanter completed his internal medicine residency at University of Michigan. He earned his Bachelor’s at Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia, School of Medicine.

Dr. Libby is the current Vice President of the Medical Society of Virginia and the founder and president of the Virginia Pediatric Group, a primary care pediatric group practice with three offices in Northern Virginia. He is also the founder and medical director of American Pediatric Consultants, a pediatric home care agency, and Chief of General Pediatrics at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. Dr. Libby is a current participant in the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation’s IMPACT™ Pediatrics quality improvement program. He received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric internship and residency at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Melton is the co-founder and a family physician with C-Health, P.C. in Lebanon, VA, a university-affiliated private practice, and is co-director of REMOTE, a Community Service Board initiative to increase addiction treatment services in Southwest Virginia. He serves as the medical examiner for Russell County and was appointed by the Virginia Secretary of Commerce & Trade as the physician representative for the Russell County Wellness, Fitness & Recreation Team. Melton also serves as the team physician for the Lebanon High School Football Team and is a visiting assistant professor for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia. From 1996-98, he was an active duty family medicine physician at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital in Fort Campbell, KY and from 1998-2000 was an active duty brigade surgeon for the 325th Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Virginia. Dr. Melton is a 2009 Fellow of the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute.

Dr. Moore is currently an internal medicine Resident at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke. She received the Intern of the Year Award in 2009 and will be Internal Medicine Chief Resident at Carilion Clinic in 2011. Dr. Moore is a member of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine and the American College of Physicians. She received her bachelors degree in chemistry and French from the University of Virginia and her Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. As a Medical Society of Virginia Foundation Associate Director, Dr. Bonny hopes to continue to put ideas into action that improve patient care and physician-patient relationships.
Michele Nedelka, M.D., Program Chair

Dr. Nedelka is a second year resident in Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia. She has served for the past two years as an Associate Director and Director on the MSV Foundation Board of Directors, as the representative of the medical residents. She was the very first medical resident to serve in this capacity, after successfully lobbying to have the position created. Dr. Nedelka also has the distinction of being the only medical student to successfully complete the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute -- she is a 2007-2008 fellow. Prior to her involvement with the MSV Foundation, Dr. Nedelka served as the Student Director on the MSV Board of Directors and as the Region VI Alternate Delegate for the American Medical Association’s Medical Student Section. Dr. Nedelka is also a physician assistant (PA), formerly with Chesapeake Emergency Physicians, a community hospital emergency department with an average annual volume of greater than 60,000 patients. She received her M.D. from Eastern Virginia Medical School, her PA-C from Towson University/CCBC Essex and her BA in Biology from Hood College, both in Maryland. She recently represented MSVF at the all entity MSV Board retreat.

Karen S. Rheuban, M.D., Director
Charlottesville
Dr. Rheuban currently serves as Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Medical Director of the University of Virginia Office of Telemedicine. In addition to providing direct clinical services to patients (both inpatient and outpatient), Dr. Rheuban oversees a large ACCME accredited continuing medical education program that includes educational services delivered via on-site lecture or videoconferencing formats, an affiliated hospital program that provides services to 25 hospitals as well as computer-assisted instructional materials, and web-based on-line continuing education activities. Dr. Rheuban is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a board member of the Center for Telemedicine Law and the American Telemedicine Association. She has presented Congressional testimony regarding telehealth and worked with Virginia Medicaid to ensure coverage of telehealth services for all eligible Virginia children regardless of geographic location. She has been regularly listed in the “Best Doctors in America” database and was recently profiled in the National Library of Medicine’s exhibit “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.” She is currently nominated to serve as the representative of the academic medical centers to the MSV Board of Directors and is the 2010 Salute to Service “Service to the Uninsured and Underserved” winner.

A member of the Virginia House of Delegates since 2006, Delegate Valentine serves on the Transportation Committee, the Science and Technology Committee and the Sub-Committee to study fuel-efficient vehicles and transportation funding. In April 2007, Delegate Valentine was appointed by Governor Kaine to serve on the Virginia Interagency Coordinating Council. She was also named as the 2007 Nicki Bazaco Individual Distinction Award winner by the Medical Society of Virginia Alliance, awarded to the individual who best promotes health education and quality of care through legislation. Delegate Valentine has been named as a Top 20 delegate two years in a row by the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and recently completed the school's Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership.

Dr. Wagner is in private practice and specializes in vitreoretinal surgery and ocular oncology with offices in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Kilmarnock, VA and Elizabeth City, NC. He is also an Assistant Professor for the Medical College of Virginia and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Wagner serves on the Board of Directors for The Diabetes Institutes Foundation and is an attending surgeon, research consultant, and board member for The Diabetes Institutes. Dr. Wagner also serves on the Board of Directors for the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He volunteers with the Free Clinic of Virginia Beach, does mission work abroad, and is a 3rd generation pilot. He is the first physician to participate in Lead Virginia, a statewide leadership program. Dr. Wagner attended Northwestern University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for his Doctor of Medicine. He is a 2006-2007 Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute fellow.
